Jessica Korda loses ground in Avnet LPGA Classic
Bradenton's Jessica Korda fell back in the Avnet LPGA Classic after a 1-over par 73 in the third round.
Pendleton School at IMG Academies grad and reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champ Paula Creamer faltered as well.
So did former IMG standout Taylor Leon.
Creamer sits at 2-over par for the tournament following a 75 on Saturday.
She's one shot behind Korda, who is tied for 33rd.
Leon, meanwhile, ballooned to a 78 for a 7-over par 223 total.
Teenage wunderkind Lexi Thompson shares the lead with Korea's Song-Hee Kim at 7-under par with just one round to go.
Michael Colgate in front after Sarasota City first round
Sarasota High junior Michael Colgate leads the Sarasota City Men's Amateur after first round action at Bobby Jones Golf Complex held on the British Course.
Colgate posted a 3-under par 69 for a one-shot cushion over three players.
Bradenton's Phil Walters and Cardinal Mooney alumnus Chris Kennedy are two of those players sitting at 2-under 70.

Action resumes Sunday, before finishing the final two rounds next weekend.
Jessica Korda charges up Avnet LPGA Classic leaderboard
Bradenton's Jessica Korda fired her first sub-70 round for the 2011 LPGA Tour season on Friday.
Korda's rookie campaign hasn't gone smoothly - missing two cuts and cashing in the guaranteed-invite tournaments thus far in '11.
However, the 18-year-old high school senior might just have found her missing touch at the Avnet LPGA Classic in Mobile, Ala.
Her 3-under par 69 included five birdies that has her sitting in a tie for 29th at even-par.
Joining Korda on the weekend is Pendleton School at IMG Academies graduate Paula Creamer (T21st, 1-under par) and another former IMG standout, Taylor Leon, who is one shot behind Korda.
Monday qualifier and Bradenton resident Jaclyn Sweeney played better in round two, but her 75 left her with a 156 total and a missed cut.
Sweeney has full-time status on the Ladies European Tour, which did not have an event this week.
Despite taking up a spot on the alternate list for this week's LPGA event, Sweeney was so far down that her best chance at making the tourney was through the "Open Qualifier" - just one of a handful on the circuit in 2011.
The tournament concludes with Sunday's final round.

Sarasota City Men's Amateur next two weekends
The 40th annual Sarasota City Men's Amateur is a crown jewel for any amateur in the area.
Players like former Ryder Cup winning captain Paul Azinger, current West Florida Golf Tour money leader Joey Lamielle and former Florida State Amateur champ Mark Leetzow have all reigned supreme at the annual gathering at Bobby Jones Golf Complex.
The tournament is also has a unique flavor to it since it's a 72-hole contest conducted over two weekends.
Several Manatee County players are in this year's field, which usually attracts many golfers for the multi-flighted tournament held on the British Course.
This year's venue is revamped as former champ and Bradenton resident Phil Walters said following his title at the Bradenton City Two-Man Combo that the course will have new tee boxes on some holes.
And Walters said those tee boxes are further back in most cases.
Here are the weekend's first and second round pairings.
Check back on this blog for results.
Callaway Collegiate Match Play awarded to Concession

The Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship is coming to Manatee County.
The 2012 edition is scheduled for March 18-20 at The Concession Golf Club.
Augusta State won the first tournament back in 2002, and the annual tourney has featured future PGA Tour stars.
Dustin Johnson and Camilo Villegas are current big names on the PGA Tour that have played the tournament in the past.
Villegas was on the Florida Gators club that won the championship in 2003, the program's lone title in the event.
The University of South Florida is the host. The Concession was named Golf Digest's "Best New Private Course of 2006" according to a news release.
"We are extremely proud to partner with USF to bring an event of this stature to the Sarasota area," said Concession general manager Bruce Cassidy Jr. in the news release. "The Concession offers many risk/reward opportunities. It will be exciting to see the best Division I collegiate golfers tackle the course in match play."Jack Nicklaus and Bradenton resident Tony Jacklin co-designed The Concession and named it after the famed Ryder Cup moment where Nicklaus conceded a nerve-wracking putt to Jacklin for the first-ever tie in the biennial match play tourney's history.
Nicklaus returned to Manatee County in March 2010 to go over proposed changes to the pristine layout.

Paula Creamer fares well in opening round; other area players struggle

Paula Creamer leads Manatee County players at the Avnet LPGA Classic in Mobile, Ala. after carding a first-round 71 to tie for 16th.
The Pendleton School at IMG Academies alum is four shots behind tournament co-leaders Grace Park and Song-Hee Kim.
Here's how the other three players with area connections fared on Thursday:
Jessica Korda continues to struggle in her rookie season, posting a 3-over par 75. However, Korda's round came on a difficult scoring day, where only 21 players broke par.
Taylor Leon is tied for 61st after a 2-over 74.
And Monday qualifier Jaclyn Sweeney struggled to a 9-over par 81 in her 2011 LPGA Tour debut.
The second round continues Friday.
Florida senior Bank Vongvanij makes Palmer Cup team
If leading the University of Florida men's golf team to an SEC title wasn't enough, senior Bank Vongvanij was named to the Palmer Cup team last week.
The former Bradenton Academy standout placed fifth in giving the Gators their first SEC Championship in eight years, according to the UF Athletic Department.
Vongvanij joins seven other players on Team USA for the 2011 edition of the annual competition against Europe.
The match-play event is slated for June 9-11 at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn.
The United States leads the all-time series 7-6-1 named in Arnold Palmer's honor.

Seath Lauer joins area players in Nationwide Tour bid

The Nationwide Tour's South Georgia Classic featured some West Florida Golf Tour players attempting to Monday qualify.
Former Lakewood Ranch High and Florida State University standout Seath Lauer joined Matthew Galloway and Daniel Stone for a spot into this week's event.
Former PGA Tour regular Casey Wittenberg also tried qualifying.
So did Ty Tryon and Tyler Leon, who spent time at IMG Academies like Wittenberg.
None of those made it through the one-day qualifier.
The Nationwide Tour conducted the qualifier at two separate venues - seven players made this week's field at each site.
Stone came the closest after a 6-under par 66. His round at Doublegate Country Club only netted him a seven-way playoff for four spots.
He lost out.
Wittenberg finished in 53rd after a 2-under par 70.
Lauer, Galloway, Tryon and Leon all played at Glen Arven Country Club.
Lauer and Galloway both carded 70s to tie for 41st at that site.
Leon, whose sister Taylor is playing the Avnet LPGA Classic this week, posted a 1-under 70 and Tryon finished at 1-over 73.
The tournament has generated buzz because former Atlanta Braves starting pitcher John Smoltz was given a sponsor's exemption into the tournament.
Jaclyn Sweeney qualifies for Avnet LPGA Classic
Bradenton's Jaclyn Sweeney earned one of two qualifying spots into this week's Avnet LPGA Classic after carding a 69 on Monday.
Sweeney joins Paula Creamer, Jessica Korda and Taylor Leon as players with a connection to the area in this week's LPGA Tour stop.
The former Arizona State standout shares a coach at IMG Academies with Creamer in David Whelan.
Both players and Leon relocated to the area for the year-round training at IMG.
Meanwhile, Korda was born and raised in Bradenton. She's the daughter to former touring tennis professional Petr Korda.
Unlike the PGA Tour, the LPGA does not have Monday qualifiers for each event.
There are only seven "open" qualifiers for the 2011 season.
Sweeney's on a break from the Ladies European Tour, where she has full-time status based on her performance at last winter's Q-School.
The LET doesn't have another tournament until the Turkish Airlines Turkish Open scheduled for May 5-8.
Sweeney's last LET event was the Lalla Meryem Cup at the beginning of April.
The Andover, Mass. native was listed as an alternate for this week's LPGA event, but was so far down in the order that her best bet to make the field was to qualify on Monday.
She did and will tee it up at 7:45 a.m. in Thursday's first round.
Creamer's opening round tee time is at 8:29 a.m. Korda begins at 12:56 p.m.
Leon, whose brothers Trent and Tyler also play professionally after training at IMG as youths, starts her tournament at 1:29 p.m.
Only Korda starts the first round off No. 10 at Magnolia Grove-Crossings Course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Mobile, Ala.

College Notebook: Florida and FSU women to battle
The holiday weekend didn't translate into time off for college golfers.
Not with NCAA Regionals looming around the corner.
Several conference championships featuring players with Manatee County connections took place.
Then on Monday, the NCAA revealed the 72-teams and 18 individual participants at three regional sites for Division I women's golf.
All three regional tournaments take place May 5-7, with eight teams and two individuals advancing from each venue to the NCAA Championship slated for May 18-21 in Bryan, Texas.
So here's a quick peak at some players with area ties that are heading to regionals:
Starting with the East Regional at LPGA International in Daytona Beach (Stetson are the hosts), the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles will take their rivalry to the links against some top-notch competition.
The East features last year's national champion, Purdue, and perennial title contender, Arizona State.
Florida is littered with former IMG Academy standouts.
Five of the seven players on the program's roster honed their game in Bradenton before heading north to Gainesville.
Sophomores Isabelle Lendl and Mia Piccio along with junior Andrea Watts led UF to a ninth place showing at the SEC Championships.
All three trained at IMG. Joining UF at the East Regional is SEC champion Auburn and Big Ten champ Michigan State.
FSU, which claimed second in the ACC Championship, doesn't have any former area players on its club.
Speaking of the ACC Championship, Miami's Maria Ronderos made it as an individual.
According to a news release from the Hurricanes Athletic Department, Ronderos is the first player since 2003 to make the regional tournament as an individual.
The former Manatee High star is in her senior season at Miami, where she posted a final round 74 to tie for 21st at the ACC Championship and cement a regional berth.
Tiger Woods' niece, Cheyenne, crushed the competition with a seven-shot victory.
She shot 5-under par for Wake Forest in the 54-hole tournament.
Also joining Ronderos as an individual is USF's Shena Yang. It's the sophomore's second straight berth as an individual.
Check the blog later in the week for local players in the other women's regionals.

Steve Pleis backs up at Hooters Tour event
Parrish's Steve Pleis and former David Leadbetter Golf Academy standout David Gossett were the lone players with ties to Manatee County to make the cut at the NGA Hooters Tour stop in Fayetteville, Ga.
Both players carded strong opening rounds at the Whitewater Creek Open presented by Michelob Ultra.
Pleis shot 65, while Gossett posted 63.
However, both players have struggled to duplicate those superb rounds.
Pleis shot a 1-over par 73 on Saturday and is tied for 37th at 6-under for the 72-hole tournament.
Gossett also carded a 73 in the third round. He's tied for 22nd. Gossett, who won the 1999 U.S. Amateur, began the day tied for fifth while Pleis started tied for 17th.
Gossett is 10 shots behind leader Garrett Osborn. Pleis is 13 strokes back.
Former Oklahoma State and Bradenton Academy standout Casey Wittenberg did not make the cut.
Neither did Englishman Jake Shepherd, who is listed from Longboat Key while in America.
Wittenberg soared to a 75 in the second round for a 146 total. Meanwhile, Shepherd also played worse in Friday's round. He posted a 77 for a 150 total.
Players at 141 or better advanced to the weekend.
Tip of the week: The Fried Egg
No, we're not talking about some breakfast food.
We're talking about the dreaded fried egg bunker shot that plagues so many golfers.
Bradenton resident Paul Azinger, a former PGA Championship winner and Ryder Cup winning captain, offers tips and drills through his Golfplan App for the iPhone and iPod.
Here's Zinger's advice on handling the fried egg bunker shot:

Bradenton players help Florida capture SEC title
The University of Florida men's golf team won the 2011 SEC Championship last weekend after a couple former Bradenton-based golfers buoyed the team's performance.
Arnond "Bank" Vongvanij (Bradenton Academy) and Tommy Mou (IMG Academies) placed fifth and a tie for 21st, respectively, on the individual leaderboard at the Sea Island's Seaside Course.
Vongvanij, a senior, carded a 1-over par 211 total for the 54-hole tournament. Mou, a sophomore, posted an 8-over par 218 total.
The Gators finished at 8-over par as a team.
They also had the overall individual winner, which bolstered the club's surge toward the SEC crown at the St. Simons Island, Ga. layout.
Next up for the Gators is the NCAA Regionals in Ocala slated for May 19-21.

Nick Jones ready for "Race to the Ritz"
Nick Jones is eager to play in the West Florida Golf Tour's "Race to the Ritz" event held at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club in May.
The format - a match play battle among the tour's top 12 players on the Order of Merit - suits his style.
Jones said that's all he's played while growing up with his grandfather and his grandfather's friends.
Jones is also the nephew to former multiple PGA Tour winner John Huston, who is known as a streaky player.
The 24-year-old said when he was 16, his swing matched up almost identically to his famous uncle's swing.
And in match play, a streaky player can fare quite well.
Jones said he makes many birdies during his rounds, which is another plus for the match play format.
He's currently sitting fifth on the WFGT's money list - the top four earn a first-round bye during the event slated for May 14-15.
To read more about Jones' story, check out Thursday's edition of the Bradenton Herald.
Summer tournaments at the Meadows
Looking for a competitive game this summer?
Check out the tournament series - dubbed "Goin' Big at The Groves" - slated for the Groves course at the Meadows Country Club in north Sarasota.
The private club is on the Big Summer Golf Card, which went on sale in late March.
Beginning on May 6, the Meadows will host one tournament per month during the summer with playoffs to follow.
The cost is $18 per player, which includes golf (with cart), lunch and a drink at the club's Centre Court Lounge.
It's a best ball format for foursomes that starts at 9 a.m.
Other dates for the event are: June 10, July 8 and August 5.
Raffles with hole, team and individual prizes are also offered.
The Groves is an executive 18-hole layout, but has several par-4's and is a tricky track to navigate.
Call the Meadows at 306-3144 or drop by the pro shop for more information.

Paul Azinger discusses plenty on Golf Channel show
Paul Azinger with Team USA after winning the 2008 Ryder Cup. Courtesy of McClatchy-Tribune News Service.
Bradenton resident Paul Azinger was on The Golf Channel's Morning Drive show early Tuesday morning.
The television show is formatted like a talk radio program and Azinger was brought in via phone to go over some golf topics.
Here's a snippet into what the former Ryder Cup winning captain had to say:
- The first question centered around his Golfplan App for the iPhone and iPad. Azinger said the Golfplan App uses short (under a minute) drills as a fixer. He also said there's going to be a new add-on for the Golfplan App, which will offer tips/drills to do indoors when it's snowing or raining.
- The conversation then shifted toward Tiger Woods. Zinger was asked about the current PGA Tour climate for the 2011 season, which has seen numerous first-time winners as the "Roaring 20s" - players under the age of 30 - takes center stage. He said there's a new breed out there that has no fear and won't be intimidated. And the focus is on Tiger to see how he reacts. Zinger went on about the greatest athletes and what separates them from their peers. The greatest athletes (i.e. Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan, etc.) is that they don't think about anything when performing. The other players are thinking about something. And that's what has happened to Woods lately - he's had a lot going on off the course and that's what he's thinking about. Azinger concluded with a Woods stat, saying he went 13 years before missing a short putt that he had to make - the one against Y.E. Yang in the PGA Championship - and he missed three short ones at Augusta National in this year's Masters.
- The hosts asked Zinger what player he would buy stock in for the next three years. Despite it being a tough question, the former PGA Championship winner answered with Woods, because the price for a Woods stock would probably be similar to Martin Kaymer or Rickie Fowler right now. And with Woods, he said he thinks he'll be back. It's just a matter of time.
- Speaking of time, just before it ended on his segment, the hosts asked Azinger whether he's running for politics. While Azinger said he enjoys politics and often tweets about it, he has no immediate plans to run for office. However, he said he wouldn't rule that out for his late 50s or early 60s at the earliest.

Paula Creamer in low-key practice session during LPGA Tour break
Paula Creamer at last year's CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge. Courtesy of McClatchy-Tribune News Service.
With the LPGA Tour on hiatus for a few weeks, the circuit's star players are left to head home and recharge their batteries before grinding again in a lucrative tournament atmosphere.
Take Paula Creamer for example.
While at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club on Monday, yours truly overheard that the Pink Panther was in town and at the Lakewood Ranch course to practice her game.
She's an honorary Ritz member.
Creamer, a former Pendleton School at IMG Academies standout, has yet to win on the LPGA Tour this year.
However, she's performed well - notching two top 10 finishes.
Creamer also tied for 19th in the most recent LPGA Tour event, which was the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
Creamer is the reigning U.S. Women's Open champ and the Ritz puts out pink golf balls for her to practice with while she's at the course to hone her game.
She was practicing Monday with her coach, David Whelan.
Following the round, Creamer had this to say on Twitter:
"No matter how much I practice I just can't se to beat David!!! I don't get it! Drives me crazy," Creamer tweeted."The next LPGA Tour event is the Avnet LPGA Classic held in Mobile, Ala. at the end of April.
The Monday Recap: Rory McIlroy
A dejected Rory McIlroy walking up the 18th hole in the final round of the Masters. Courtesy of McClatchy-Tribune News Service.
After just a week from a monumental meltdown that could even take a seasoned veteran's nerves months to recover from, Rory McIlroy was once again in contention.
The 21-year-old from Northern Ireland played in this past week's European PGA Tour's Malaysian Open, ultimately finishing third.
It was only eight days ago that McIlroy ventured into unknown territory on Augusta National's 10th hole, which resulted in a triple-bogey seven. He ended up posting a back nine 43 in his quest for the green jacket.
Fast-forward to this past week and McIlroy's worst round was his third-round 72.
McIlroy trailed 17-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero heading into the final round.
Manassero entered with a one-shot cushion over McIlroy and pushed it to three strokes after the Northern Irishman double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole.
Despite a couple late birdies, McIlroy fell short.
However, he still showcased the moxie and resolve to put himself into contention after such a devastating defeat in the Masters.
Bradenton resident Paul Azinger even tweeted about McIlroy during the Malaysian Open.
"Langers win wk aftr RC ws impressive, but win&lose as a team.Rory was alone last week. Proving this wk he wants the stage, MORE IMPR! GO RORY," Azinger tweeted.
What Zinger was talking about was the comparison between McIlroy and Bernhard Langer, who won the week after gift-wrapping the Ryder Cup to Team USA in 1991.
Manassero's victory is his second on the European Tour, coming just a couple days before his 18th birthday.
He earned himself exemptions into the remaining major championships and a spot in the top 40 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Adding in the Masters performances from Charl Schwartzel and Jason Day, and the youth movement is in full swing.
