Local amateur: Phil Walters falters to third place finish in Sarasota City Men's Amateur

Bradenton's Phil Walters' bid to go wire-to-wire to capture the Sarasota City Men's Amateur at the Bobby Jones Golf Complex on Sunday failed when he fired an 80.

Walters held the lead after every round of the 72-hole, four-day, two-weekend tournament.

However, he ended up in third place, five shots behind Sarasota High's Nick Celestino, who won with a 282 total and a 69 on the British Course on Sunday.

Walters has had success in the local amateur scene, recently he teamed with Tim Judy in April to win the Bradenton City Men's Two-Man Combo title at River Run Golf Links.

The Monday Recap: Local Edition

While the Sarasota City Men's Amateur wrapped up its 40th annual four-day, 72-hole tournament, area players also were on the tournament trail.Link
University of North Florida senior and former Cardinal Mooney standout Chris Kennedy polished off his second Sarasota City Men's Amateur title at Bobby Jones Golf Club's British Course.

He carded a final round 71 for a 12-under par 276 total. Kennedy's four rounds were all under par, and he downed reigning Bradenton City Men's Amateur champ Aaron Bishop (second place, 283 total) and Bradenton resident Phil Walters (third, 288) for the crown.

Walters previously won both the Bradenton and Sarasota City Men's Amateur titles, and recently took the Bradenton City Two-Man Combo championship with Bishop.

Meanwhile, Bradenton's Jaclyn Sweeney collected 3,668.75 Euros for her performance overseas in the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open.

Sweeney carded a 1-over par 74 in the final round to tie for 14th place at 6-over par.

Christel Boeljon won the tournament at 5-under par 287. Only four players broke par for the 72-hole tourney.

Sweeney is 23rd on the Ladies European Tour's Order of Merit with 11,237.64 Euros.

That equates to $16,111.40 based on the current exchange rate.

Back in the United States, Florida State University alumnus Seath Lauer fired his best round of the week to vault up to a tie for 44th place at the eGolf Professional Tour's Willow Creek Open in High Point, N.C.

The former Lakewood Ranch High standout shot 5-under par 67 to grab a $1,377.50 payday for the 72-hole event.

Lauer had previously attempted to Monday qualify for the Nationwide Tour events in Georgia.

He missed in his bids the past two weeks, but area pro Devin Spies made it into the Stadion Classic at UGA field.

Like Lauer and Nationwide Tour regular Travis Hampshire, Spies has played regularly on the West Florida Golf Tour in the past year.

However, both Spies and Hampshire failed to make the cut after posting a 148 and 146 total, respectively.

The cut came at 144.

Kennedy is at 11-under par, a 205 total, through 54 holes.

Aaron Bishop, the reigning Bradenton City Men's Amateur champ, and Bradenton resident Phil Walters sit in second and third place, respectively.

Bishop is at a 212 total, while Walters - his winning partner in the recent Bradenton City Two-Man Combo Championship - is two more strokes adrift.

First-round leader Michael Colgate is in fourth place at 1-under par 215.

Those four are the only players under par for the three rounds.

Sarasota City Men's Amateur next two weekends

The 40th annual Sarasota City Men's Amateur is a crown jewel for any amateur in the area.

Players like former Ryder Cup winning captain Paul Azinger, current West Florida Golf Tour money leader Joey Lamielle and former Florida State Amateur champ Mark Leetzow have all reigned supreme at the annual gathering at Bobby Jones Golf Complex.

The tournament is also has a unique flavor to it since it's a 72-hole contest conducted over two weekends.

Several Manatee County players are in this year's field, which usually attracts many golfers for the multi-flighted tournament held on the British Course.

This year's venue is revamped as former champ and Bradenton resident Phil Walters said following his title at the Bradenton City Two-Man Combo that the course will have new tee boxes on some holes.

And Walters said those tee boxes are further back in most cases.

Here are the weekend's first and second round pairings.

Sarasota's Men's City Championship field is set

The 39th Annual City of Sarasota Men's Championship begins Saturday on the British Course at Bobby Jones Golf Complex. The 72-hole tournament is played over two weekends, and is the oldest amateur city amateur event in either Manatee or Sarasota counties.

The field is stacked with top local amateurs including defending champion Brian Schmidt. The Sarasotan polished off the recent City of Bradenton Two-Man Combo Championship with partner Eli Nogiec, also of Sarasota, at River Run Golf Links this past weekend.

Schmidt also is the reigning City of Bradenton Men's Amateur champion.

Current Bradenton and Sarasota seniors titleholder, Ray Wenck, is in the field, as is Bradenton's Phil Walters.

Walters, the 2008 champion in both Bradenton and Sarasota, is regaining form after partnering with Larry O'Brien to finish in second place behind the Schmidt/Nogiec team last weekend.
